Here’s the thing about choosing the right wedding photographer: yes, you need to LOVE their photos! Obviously. But you also need to remember that you’re going to spend a LOT of your wedding day with this person. Possibly more time than you spend with half your guests.
Your photographer is there from the getting-ready chaos all the way through the dance floor. They’re keeping an eye on the timeline, fixing your dress, tracking down Dad for the first look, somehow finding the one family member who disappeared right before photos, watching the light, and catching all the stuff happening around you while you’re busy actually getting married!
So when you’re booking your Arizona wedding photographer, look beyond the Instagram grid. Do you like their personality? Do you trust them? Are they organized? Do you get off the call feeling excited and like you can fully hand this part of the day over to them? THAT matters.
The same goes for your entire vendor team. The people you hire should make the wedding easier, take things off your plate, and be people you’re genuinely excited to work with. Sean and Valerie did this incredibly well for their wedding at Desert View Weddings & Events in Apache Junction. They had a vendor team they felt good about, which meant they could stop worrying about what everyone else was doing and just have fun!!!

Start With the Vendors Who Shape the Rest of Your Day
Before we even get into how to choose the right wedding photographer, let’s talk booking order because this can get confusing FAST.
Once you have your date and venue, start thinking about the vendors who can only take one wedding, or a limited number of weddings, on your date. Your planner, photographer, videographer, entertainment, and other priority vendors are not people I’d wait on if you already know who you want. Especially if personality or style is a huge reason you’re hiring them.
If you’ve stalked their portfolio, read every review, gotten on a call, and immediately thought about how you wanted to book them, don’t keep shopping just because you feel like you’re supposed to compare 14 more vendors! The goal isn’t to find every possible option on the internet. It’s to build a vendor team you genuinely trust.
The best wedding vendors are genuinely invested in helping you have a great wedding day. Your vendor team is creating the experience with you. They’re building the design, running the timeline, feeding your guests, filling the dance floor, fixing problems before you ever hear about them, and preserving everything when it’s over. Choose people you WANT in that room.

Choosing the Right Wedding Photographer Goes Way Beyond Instagram
Let’s talk about actually finding your photographer because there is so much more to it than scrolling their Instagram, seeing a pretty sunset photo, and immediately sending an inquiry.
Instagram is great for getting a feel for someone’s work, but it’s still a highlight reel. I want you to dig a little deeper before choosing the right wedding photographer and ask to see a full wedding gallery. Not just the 30 prettiest photos from the day! The getting-ready photos, family photos, ceremony, midday portraits, reception, dance floor, all of it!
Especially if you’re planning an Arizona wedding! Can they handle full sun without completely washing everything out? What do skin tones look like in harsh light? What happens once you move into a dark reception space? Do you still love their editing after sunset when the flash comes out? If you’re spending a ton of time choosing your florals and color palette, do those colors look like the colors you picked?
I also want you to READ THE REVIEWS. Don’t just look for “our photos were amazing!” Look for the stuff that tells you what they’re like to work with. Were they organized? Did they communicate well? Did they keep things moving when the timeline got behind? Were people who hate being photographed feel comfortable? Were they helpful BEFORE the wedding too?
Then get on a call with them!!! This is probably my biggest tip. You can learn way more from a 20-minute conversation than you can from 40 emails back and forth. Make sure you enjoy talking to them, feel comfortable asking questions, and trust them enough to hand over the reins when wedding day comes.
Pretty photos get you interested. The full galleries, reviews, experience, communication, and actual person behind the camera are what should help you decide!
Want to see what all of this looks like across a real wedding day? Take a look through my Arizona wedding portfolio and pay attention to the things we just talked about: full-sun portraits, color, candid reactions, receptions, and everything in between!

Look at How Their Editing Style Works With YOUR Kind of Venue
This is a BIG one when you’re choosing the right wedding photographer, and I don’t think couples are told to look at it nearly enough. Don’t just scroll through a photographer’s portfolio and think, “Yep, I like their editing.” Go find a wedding that looks somewhat similar to YOURS.
If you’re getting married at The Paseo with desert, mountains, and warm Arizona light everywhere, a gallery photographed on a super green golf course isn’t going to show you how that photographer’s editing will look on your wedding day. Go look at their desert weddings!
Do you like how they photograph that golden Arizona sunset? Are the mountains super warm or more true-to-color? What do skin tones look like against the desert? Do you like the greens of the cactus? If you’re bringing in colorful florals, are those colors still colorful in their photos? These are the little things I want you paying attention to!
Also, no, this does not mean your photographer needs to have shot your exact venue before. I will die on this hill!!! If you love someone’s work, experience, and personality, don’t cross them off your list just because they haven’t photographed your venue yet. A strong Arizona wedding photographer knows how to read the light, work with different environments, and find the good stuff wherever you put them. Plus, getting somewhere new and immediately hunting for all the photo spots is so much fun.
The bigger question is whether you love how their editing works with the type of wedding you’re planning. You’re going to spend months choosing your colors, flowers, venue, outfits, and all those tiny details. Make sure you also love the way your photographer is going to photograph them!

Your Budget Matters, But Don’t Let It Make the Entire Decision
Yes, you should have a wedding budget! Also yes, photography needs to fit somewhere inside of it. But when you’re choosing the right wedding photographer, I don’t want you comparing photographers based on price alone!
If you find someone whose work you absolutely love, whose editing looks exactly how you want your wedding remembered, who has the experience you’re looking for, and who you immediately click with on the phone, that might be an area where you give yourself a little wiggle room.
Because you’re not only paying for the photos that end up framed in your house. Your photographer is documenting everything you physically cannot see happening on your wedding day. Your dad’s reaction before your first look. Or your grandparents hanging out at cocktail hour. Whatever chaos your bridal party has gotten themselves into while you’re somewhere else.
You’re also paying for the person handling photography ALL day. Someone who can keep family photos moving, adjust when the timeline changes, find good light, help you feel comfortable in front of the camera, and still catch what’s happening around them.
So compare the packages, absolutely. But also compare full galleries, experience, reviews, communication, editing style, personality, and how you actually feel talking to them. If one photographer costs a little more but you’re sitting there thinking, “Yes, I trust this person with my wedding,” don’t ignore that just to save a little money.

Your Photographer Should Actually Know You
This is a huge part of how I photograph weddings! I don’t want to show up on wedding day knowing your names, what time the ceremony starts, and that we’re supposed to take family photos at 4:30. I want to know what I’m walking into! Who are your people? Who is going to cry the second they see you? Are there certain family relationships I should be paying extra attention to? What parts of the day are you most excited about?
All of that changes how I photograph your wedding. I don’t shoot every couple the same way because every couple isn’t the same. I don’t want to learn three facts about you and then run you through the exact same shot list I give every couple! The better I know what matters to you, the more intentionally I can photograph YOUR wedding instead of just photographing “a wedding.
Sean and Valerie are such a perfect example of this. From our first conversation, I knew their people were going to be the most important part of their day. Their family, the kiddos in their lives, and the people who have been part of their story weren’t just guests showing up to watch them get married!
So when the wedding day came, I was already watching for those relationships. I knew where my attention needed to be, who mattered to them, and what I didn’t want to miss. THAT is why getting to know my couples beforehand matters so much to me. I want you to look through your gallery afterward and immediately get transported back!

Sean + Valerie’s Wedding Was ALL About Their People
Sean and Valerie are such a great example of why I want to know what matters to you before wedding day. I already knew their people were a huge priority, not just the two of them. Valerie incorporated drawings from her students into the tables, their seating chart included their guests’ own wedding photos, the kiddos were involved throughout the day, and their bridal party was bringing the energy from start to finish!!!
So I wasn’t only watching Sean and Valerie. I was watching Dad during the first look, her sister during their matching-tattoo reveal, the kids running around, the bridal party reactions, and everything happening just outside of whatever the “main” moment was.
THAT’S why I want your photographer to actually know you before they show up. If I know who and what matters to you, I know where else I need to be looking while you’re busy getting married.

Amazing Photos Are Only Part of What You’re Hiring Them For
Obviously you want AMAZING wedding photos. That’s why you’re hiring a photographer! But I also want your photographer to make the wedding day easier for you, because there’s a whole lot happening behind the scenes that has nothing to do with clicking a shutter.
Before every wedding, I have a full timeline planning meeting with my couples where we basically walk through the entire day together. We figure out when all the important stuff is happening, where the best light will be, how much time we actually need for portraits, who’s included in family photos, and where we need some buffer room so one tiny delay doesn’t throw everything off.
Then when wedding day gets here, YOU don’t need to think about any of it. I’m keeping an eye on the timeline, finding the good light, fixing your dress, keeping group photos moving, and giving you enough direction that you’re never standing there wondering what the heck you’re supposed to do with your hands. If we’re running a few minutes behind, I’m figuring out where we can adjust. If something needs to be moved, fixed, grabbed, or handled, I’m probably already on it.
Plus family photos? We’re getting those done! I love your family, but we do not need to spend 45 minutes trying to locate Uncle Bob while your cocktail hour is happening without you. That’s the kind of stuff I want couples thinking about when choosing the right wedding photographer. Yes, love their work. But also make sure you’re hiring someone who can take charge when they need to, keep things organized without making the day feel rigid, and make photos fun instead of feeling like another thing on your wedding-day to-do list! I want you paying attention to your new spouse, your friends, your family, and whatever drink someone just handed you. I’ll handle the photo stuff!!!

Your Vendor Team Should Make Your Wedding Easier
When you’re choosing the right Arizona wedding photographer, pay attention to more than their photos! Sean and Valerie hired people they trusted, which meant they weren’t spending their wedding checking the timeline or wondering what was happening next. They got to hang out with their people and actually have fun!
Ask yourself: Does this photographer communicate well? Are they helpful before you’ve even booked? Do they seem organized? If the timeline runs behind, someone disappears before family photos, or Arizona gives us insane wind out of nowhere, do you trust them to handle it without making it your problem?
If you get off the call thinking, Yes, I want this person there, pay attention to that. You want a photographer who can make beautiful photos AND make your wedding day easier!
Curious what that kind of support looks like when you work with me? You can see what’s included in my Arizona wedding photography experience here!

Before You Sign, Ask About the Boring Stuff Too
Personality and incredible photos are obviously the fun part of choosing the right Arizona wedding photographer, but I also want you asking a few questions that are significantly less exciting!
What happens if your photographer gets sick? Do they bring backup equipment? How long does gallery delivery take? Is a second photographer included in your package or an add-on? How many hours of coverage are you actually getting? What happens if your timeline changes and you realize you need them to stay another hour?
Oh I know, very thrilling stuff. But the goal is for you to know exactly what you’re booking before you sign anything. You shouldn’t be three weeks out from your wedding suddenly realizing you have no idea when your photographer is leaving or whether the second photographer you thought was included actually isn’t.
I also want you to feel confident that your photographer has already thought through the “what ifs.” Because things happen on wedding days! Timelines shift. Equipment can decide today is the day it no longer wants to cooperate. Someone gets sick. Arizona weather throws us a curveball. Your photographer should already have systems and backup plans in place for the things they can prepare for.
So yes, read the contract! Ask the boring questions. Know what’s included in your package, when you can expect your photos, what happens if plans change, and what kind of backup plans they have.
You’re not being annoying by asking questions. I would much rather have my couples ask me everything beforehand and walk into their wedding knowing exactly what to expect from me. The whole point is that once wedding day gets here, you shouldn’t be thinking about any of this stuff anymore!

FAQs About Choosing the Right Wedding Photographer
How do I know if a wedding photographer is actually good?
Start with a full wedding gallery! Instagram and websites are great for getting you interested, but they’re naturally going to show you the best stuff. I want to know what the other several hundred photos look like too.
Look at getting ready, family photos, ceremonies, full-sun portraits, indoor spaces, receptions, flash photos, and the dance floor. You want to see that they can handle an entire wedding day when the lighting and location are constantly changing, not just absolutely crush golden hour.
Should I look for a photographer who has photographed a wedding similar to mine?
YES, especially when it comes to editing style.
Planning a desert Arizona wedding? Look at their desert work. Having a super colorful wedding? Find a gallery with COLOR. Getting married somewhere with tons of greenery? See how their editing handles greens.
Pay attention to skin tones, sunsets, florals, mountains, greenery, indoor lighting, and how everything looks once it gets dark. You don’t need to find your exact wedding in their portfolio, but you should feel confident that you like their work in an environment similar to yours!
Will my wedding photographer help me with the timeline?
ASK THEM!
Photography timelines aren’t only about deciding what time portraits happen. Lighting, sunset, ceremony time, family photos, travel between locations, first looks, wedding-party photos, and buffer time can all affect how the day flows.
Personally, I do a full timeline planning meeting with every couple because I don’t want us figuring this stuff out for the first time on wedding day. I want to know where we’re going, what matters most, and how we’re going to fit everything in without making your wedding feel like one giant photoshoot.

Should I choose my wedding photographer based on price?
Price should absolutely be part of the conversation. Your budget matters! But I wouldn’t make it the only thing you’re comparing. Look at experience, full galleries, editing, reviews, communication, personality, what’s included, and how much you trust them.
If you find someone and you’re thinking, “This is exactly how I want my wedding photographed, and I really freaking want this person there,” that’s when I’d look at whether there’s some wiggle room in the budget rather than immediately choosing the lowest number on your spreadsheet.
These are your memories. Choosing the right wedding photographer is about finding someone whose work you love and someone you feel really freaking good about handing your wedding day over to!

Planning an Arizona Wedding? Your Vendor Team Matters!
Every wedding has different people, different priorities, and a completely different energy. That’s one of my favorite parts of this job; I don’t want to photograph every wedding the same way.
For Sean and Valerie, their people were a massive part of the day. I knew that going in, so I wasn’t only focused on what was happening directly in front of them. I was watching Dad, their siblings, the kids, their bridal party, and everyone losing their minds around them. Also, I knew how Sean and Valerie naturally interacted, which meant portraits could feel like them instead of me running through the same poses I use at every wedding!
That’s what I want you thinking about when you’re choosing the right wedding photographer for your Arizona wedding. Of course you should love their editing and portfolio, but you should also really freaking trust the person behind the camera. You shouldn’t have to manage them on wedding day or wonder whether they’re getting what matters to you.
If you’re looking for an Arizona wedding photographer who will get to know you beforehand, help you plan the photo side of the day, keep things moving when they need to move, and be right there hyping you up when the energy calls for it, reach out here!
Tell me where you’re getting married and a little bit about what you two are planning. We can hop on a call, talk wedding, and make sure we’re a good fit before we do anything else!
